Tonnare, Tuna industries in Favignana

Tonnare of Favignana

The tuna industries of the Florio’s family

The tonnare (tuna industries) on the Island of Favignana, captured for the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

Many islands and cities around Sicily had their social and industrial tissue, through history, based on the fishing of tunas. This fish is very hard to catch but also very special because of its traveling in bulks and of its migratory patterns. I was fascinated by this story because the area around my city, Trieste, is also rich of tunas, or better it was.

In the 19th Century the industries of tuna took off, here in Favignana thanks to the Florio family that built this huge tonnara that still covers large part of the port. I draw this while waiting in the wind for the boat to bring me back to Trapani. After a morning at the discovery of the island I had to give it up because of the cold and the wind. Maybe there is winter in Sicily too, after all?
