The Church of Sant’Antonio in Gemona

The Church of Sant’Antonio in Gemona

The most ancient sanctuary dedicated to the saint

The Church of Sant’Antonio in Gemona during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

After the cathedral, I went for coffee in the city center and later I went around to do some more discovery of the beauty of the town, before my afternoon appointment to visit the Ecomuseo delle Acque in the nearby town.

Down the hill I went and I found this Sanctuary. It is an very important heritage site in town, dedicated to Sant’Antonio from Padua. This is in fact the oldest place of worship dedicated to the “Saint of miracles”. In 1227, during his stay in Gemona, Sant’Antonio had a chapel built in honor of the Virgin Annunciation. From this small building, whose remains are still clearly visible inside the church, the primitive sanctuary was built in the year 1231, the year of the death of the saint, and  consecrated on March 1248, therefore some years before the inauguration of the famous Antonian Basilica of Padua.

The church, as most of the area, was destroyed in 1976 by the earthquake and the reconstruction combined old and modern style, both in the inside and outside, making it a perfect place to sketch with its rounded lines and extreme perspectives. All surrounded by blue sky and gorgeous green mountain that enclose the area in am atmosphere of peace and devotion.
