The Church of San Francesco d’Assisi in Brescia

The inspiration that leads to creation

The Church of San Francesco d’Assisi in Brescia during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

After lunch, the air was very hot and I started feeling overwhelmed by the situation and by my project. I had travelled and I enjoyed my time but arriving to bigger cities is always harder to face the solitude and the idea that the solitude will persist.

So I started walking randomly, without thinking of the project, without a goal, just walking to clear my mind and find comfort in the movement. I arrived to a square with an old church, a square surrounded by tall buildings that gave me a feeling of enclosure. I decided to sit and draw. The church didn’t feel majestic or an important subject for my trip but I felt it was the perfect moment to draw and I followed my intuition.

Only after I finished I realized that the Church is dedicated of San Francesco of Assisi and I reminded his story. A man that had a dream, a vision and that abandoned everything and fought against everything to follow that vision, a vision that could change the world and make it a better place. I realized that big visions are common, but they require so much work that we prefer to let go and to adequate to what is happening to us. I realized that changing the world is always in our hands, it is just about choosing the path that we want to follow. Personally this realization answered to my feelings of sadness and loneliness and I manage to feel better. I don’t know if I will be able to change something, but I know that at least I want to try.

The story of the church of San Francesco

The church of San Francesco d’Assisi in Brescia stands on a land donated by the municipality of Brescia to the Franciscan friars, as a thank you for having pacified internal disputes within the municipality. The Franciscan order arrived in Brescia around 1220, after a visit to the city by the founder himself. Construction of the structures began around 1254 and continued for over a century. The cloister of the adjacent Convent, designed by Guglielmo da Frisone, was completed in 1394 making this one of the most ancient churches of the city.
