Ossario del Pasubio War Memorial

Ossario del Pasubio War Memorial

Remembering the horrors of the war and celebrating peace

Ossario del Pasubio War Memorial during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

There are places that are worthy a visit, no matter how hard it can be on the emotional level. The Ossario of the Pasubio Valley is one of those places. My friend Elisa decided to take me here, two moto girls on the curvy mountain road to see a place where so much pain and suffering took place. And where so many reflections can guide us to a different future.

This memorial was built in 1926 to remember the fallen soldiers of the First World War and here are buried the soldiers that were recovered in the area. The monument is on the top of the mountain and it is visible from the whole valley. The squared tower of 35 meters was built from the stones of the mountain itself.  Here the monument commemorates the line that the Austrians never managed to surpass and the sacrifice of the multitude to maintain the Italian borders.

Talking to my friend we had the opportunity to discuss about the importance of those places that allow the memory to remain alive, therefore putting us in front of what the past was and to realize how beautiful living in an era of peace is. It also made me think about the question of borders, something so thin and so unreal but that was (and is) considered so important to make people die for it. It is so strange, what are borders? I am not sure I am the right person to answer because for me borders are such a limitation that create an invisible separation and a cause for fear, anger and unhappiness.
