Archeological Park of Brescia

Archeological Park of Brescia

The Roman foundation of Brixia

Painting of the Archeological Park of Brescia during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

Another surprise in Brescia was the incredible Archeological Park of the Roman Brixia. The city in fact was already important in the Roman Empire due to its location on the Via Gallia, that lead to the northern territories. The area was very fertile and the importance of the city grew.

The visit to the museum was very interesting. You can see the Sanctuary of the Republican Era (1st century B.C.), the Capitolium (73 A.D.), the Theater (I-III century A.D.), and a part of the decuman maximum. In particular this last one is very interesting because it is conserved in a closed room with controlled temperature to avoid the wonderful frescoes and mosaics to get ruined.

The tour of the museum brought me back in the centuries and I found fascinating drawing the entrance to the Sanctuary, from the other side of the street. When I visit this kind of places I always wonder how it must have been in the Roman time to visit such a majestic city and how much beauty was important for the architecture of the time.
