The Fabbrica Alta in Schio and its story

Painting to tell a story of inspiration

The Fabbrica Alta of Schio and its story during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

The Fabbrica Alta of the wool production by Rossi is an industrial building built by Alessandro Rossi in 1862 in Schio and it represents one of the main symbols of the first Italian industrialization.

My friend from Schio showed me around the area because this is a very important part of the life of the town throughout the last couple of centuries. Listening to her stories I realized how deeply economy is shaping nowadays our cities, instead of the other needs that created so many of the Italian historical centers. It is such an interesting insight to see how cities and architecture are living creatures at the service of the people, and to realize that many times this is forgotten and spaces are created that don’t allow the wellbeing of the people.

The story of Alessandro Rossi and his vision

Also very interesting is the history of Alessandro Rossi that after studying in Great Britain brought back to Italy the ideas that revolutionized the production and created the Made in Italy that we know today. All with an eye to the well being of the workers. What really inspired me to paint this old abandoned Fabbrica was the desire to tell the story of what can be an example of economy built around the community and with respect of the life of this community.

Rossi in fact not only brought jobs and riches to the area, but created also gardens, libraries and houses for making life easier for his workers, creating a positive atmosphere and a everlasting positive memory in the people of the town. I think this is what it means to be at service and creating something great, with a view away from the bottom line. A story that is not often enough a part of our daily life, but that should be of inspiration for building our future.
