The mausoleum of the Colleoni Chapel in Bergamo

The chapel that rivals with the cathedral

Sketch of the Colleoni Chapel in Bergamo during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

Once I parked in Bergamo in the lower city, I went to try one of the typical sweets of the city that I was told I couldn’t miss: Polenta e Osei. This is the sweet version of the typical Venetian food. And it was very particular, but also particularly sweet. After I had no choice but to choose to climb to the old town, higher Bergamo, and hope to consume some of those calories, before falling asleep for the sugar crash.

Arrived in the center, Bergamo was a great surprise. The old city is wonderful and there are so many things to see. In the center of the old town of Bergamo there is the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore which is wonderful. But just on the side the Colleoni Family built their mausoleum, as rich as the Basilica, to show their power and richness.

I went inside and this is one of those places where you can’t take pictures. So of course I couldn’t avoid taking advantage of my drawing and I sketched this statue of the Colleoni patriarch made in 1501 to celebrate him. All over the chapel there are the references to the family history and the tombs of several members. The chapel was very crowded so I didn’t spend as much time as I would have wanted there, but it is always a good reason to go back one day.
