A place in the sun through the centuries
The Guard Tower of Sciacca: next on the #italiagrandsketchingtour
Sciacca is a beautiful jewel built on top of a hill facing the sea. And in history the sea meant richness and danger at the same time. For this reason Sicily is full of Guard Towers. This was the old Tower for guarding the sea and protecting the city from the invasions and from the pirates that in this area where very common. They came to get slaves to bring back to the Ottoman Empire.
This building is at the top of the hill, built as part of the city walls and then probably it changed destination over and over again, in continue renewal of its purpose.
While sitting on the wall and painting this tower, I came to think: why do we give buildings the opportunity to renew themselves and change their destination, while for us, we convince ourselves that we need to look for security and stability? I definitely have done it for a long time. And now that everything has changed and it is completely unsure, I never felt more alive and excited about what the future holds! It is scary, but very exciting at the same time and I definitely wouldn’t want to go back. I want to be like this strong and beautiful building, ready for the next adventure.
