Traces of an unknown past in the abandoned Cusa Caves
The Cusa Caves near Selinunte archeological park painted during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
I didn’t know about the Cusa Caves until I arrived in Sicily and my friend Francesca mentioned it as a MUST in my tour. I was lucky to be there on a gorgeous sunny day and to have a friend of mine guiding me around the archeological park and the caves.
The particularity of the Cusa Caves is that this area was abandoned and it is still unknown why. Walking in the cave there are huge cut stones and column pieces lying around everywhere ready to be brought to Selinunte for the construction of the temples and of the city. Everything left untouched through the centuries.
This place is incredible and it makes me think about the grandeur of the past. The great ability needed to build those temples and buildings. Can you imagine? Do you ever think about the incredible competence they had in ancient times? It makes me feel small and amazed by the abilities of humans. And also so excited about the future and what could be the next step in humanity!
