Norman Arch in Mazara Del Vallo

Norman Arch in Mazara Del Vallo

Entering the city like Normans did

The Norman Arch in Mazara Del Vallo painted during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.

Before heading back in the evening I stopped to paint the Norman arch that is one of the landmarks of Mazara del Vallo. The ancient entrance to the city, built in 1072 by Ruggero I d’Altavilla after the victory that stopped the Arabic conquest of the area.

Before starting Sylvia, a friend of mine, called me from Thailand and we talked like it was just few days we didn’t talk. It is such great gift to have those kind of friends that allow you to be completely yourself. I feel so lucky to have found few in the last months and new ones are appearing every day. The more I allow myself to be authentic and free the more my connections become meaningful. It is so liberating.

After the call, I sat under the sun and started sketching the fountains and then the stones. My hand and pen was traveling fast, while listening to the laughter of the children in the nearby park. And I loved the result.

While drawing, a couple of teenagers arrived with their bikes and climbed the wall, with all the exuberance and lightness of their age. I sat there wondering how cool it is to be this free. How, as adults, we limit ourselves in the things we do. I’m not saying I wanted to climb, but who knows in how many other occasions I limit myself?
