Clocktower and roofs of the castle
The Castle Tower at Castelfranco Veneto painted during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
After my first days touring with my friend, it was time to start off by myself. My first day of solo exploration. I had to get in the afternoon at another friend house so I had one whole day to explore places that I often heard but never had the opportunity to visit. My first choice was Castelfranco Veneto.
This is a medieval town with a lot of history and I decided it was time to explore it. It was market morning so I had the opportunity to see the town life before focusing on my painting. I have chosen to paint the tower at one of the entrances of the city, with its clock and its Venetian lion. This is not only a tower, it is also part of the castle that dominated with its walls and towers the historical center.
Castelfranco Veneto is a fortified center because it was created by the commune of Treviso in 1195 during the fights against Padua. So this town was fundamental for the safeguard of the territory. Later on the town passed under Verona and later to Venice and its empire.
I painted this tower after visiting the city. It is a particular experience because the difference between in and out the walls is very noticeable. It is giving you the impression of how life should have been before. All the people living outside doing their own business but having a place to run to in case of problems, a protection. I believe that living with this kind of security was the only way to survive in the most uncertain times of the middle ages.
