A beautiful stop between Bergamo and Lecco
Basilica of Saint Girolamo near Lecco painted during the #italiagrandsketchingtour.
This morning, when I left Bergamo, I checked the road to Lecco and I noticed that, in between the two cities, there was a sanctuary that looked like a perfect subject for a painting. The Basilica of San Girolamo, in fact, is built on top of this steep flight of stair decorated with plants and flowers and just under the mountains. I had to stop! Another of my intuitive stops that revealed being great.
The Sanctuary itself is very interesting because it was the place chosen by the saint when he came in the region and here was a first church dedicated to San Bartolomeo. After his death in 1537 his order decided to create a bigger church. Through the centuries the sanctuary has been enlarged and enriched, and now the facade is in baroque style with a big pronao. Inside the church I had the time to reflect and meditate. During my trip I discovered that churches have the amazing power of allowing me to deeply meditate and reach a deep interior peace.Â
After the stop in the church I took the religious itinerary that was created with the stops that narrate the history of the life of the Saint, based on sharing with the poors, the orphans and the community. The itinerary climbs up the hill in the middle of a beautiful wood, that leads to the cave that was the original hermitage where the saint lived and where the first church was built. On the side of the chapel there is the Sala della Fonte with a source of water, which according to tradition is a miracle of the saint, who touched the rock and brought water for the orphans in a dry period
